Ingotism

09/29/2011

Freezing of metals in the ingot will see a change in a crystalline state. During the period of solidification of an ingot, these crystals grow rapidly. Grain growth continues until the metals have cooled to a critical stage. If the solidification process is unduly slow, the crystals will grow to a very large size. If the metal is teemed at too high a temperature to the ingot mold, the same large crystals occur. The effect of large crystals renders the steel easy to crack and weak in strength. The remedy such as the applications of hot top & exothermic boards, use of specific refractory for different steel grades are some of the measures to address such casting defects.
