GIMM adopts the dry pressing process in the manufacture of the bottom pour refractory. This process contributes to the physical dimensions to be produced with a very tight tolerance among the joints as opposed to the wet pressing or stiff mud process still in use in other facilities.

Interlocking and Seal System

GIMM offers a regular & thin walled (light weight) interlocking hollow ware tiles GIMM administers the most stringent dimensional tolerances ( in +/- 0.5mm to 2.0mm) applicable to the tongue and grove (male & female systems) of the adjoining shapes that precludes the use of mortars in most case. It reduces labor & material cost in the assembly of the refractory and pre-empts the use of mortars at the joints.

Together with the equally rigid dimensional tolerances imposed on the length, radius and corners of the hollow wares, the bottom pour refractory are tightly gripped in grey iron cast sprue plates and cast iron base plate. Any uncovered space between the sprue plates and the base plate is filled with sand or other filling materials to provide a well compressed pouring platform for each cluster or nest of ingot molds.

Given the right selection of refractory quality and that the ingot molds, the stool plates, the sprue plates and base plate are properly laid out, it is possible to achieve a near “Sandless System” in bottom pouring operations.

Selection of Refractory Qualities

GIMM offers fire clay, high alumina, alumina-mullite and other customized materials in the manufacturing of the hollow wares. The following fire clay and high alumina materials serve as general references of the bottom pour refractory.

GIMM offers a wide range of material selection to meet the various metallurgical needs (such as ultra low carbon tolerances), steel grades & ingot casting practices of the customers given the multi-plants facilities at our disposal. These plants are selected on basis of their selective mining & mineralogy characteristics, the quality program and the comparative advantage of the manufacturing sites. All selected plants are ISO 9001 certified.

Other shapes and sizes are available based on the specific requirements of the customers. Certain shapes could be light strap-banded at customers’ requests in areas of critical application.
